Dr. Sylvia Olayinka Blyden, Advocacy for Women and Youth Empowerment has received an award for me from Kenema Artists Union in honour of her work to promote peace amongst youths across Sierra Leone and also for highly supporting youth empowerment for nation building.

The citation reads: “I am highly appreciated for my support & help in ensuring peace, love & oneness remain an option and as a responsibility for every youth across the land”.

Also over the weekend, Dr. Blyden was awarded Sierra Leone’s Ambassador for Social Justice, at the West Africa Women’s Network Awards held as part of celebrations marking the International Women’s Day in Sierra Leone.

Receiving the Awards, Dr. Blyden was accompanied by women of integrity and national icon, including Fanta Fillie of Gbense, Kono; Hawa Kallon-Caso of Jawei, Kailahun; Elsie Kondomoloh of Nongowa, Kenema; Margaret Lamin of Kamajei, Moyamba (home of Madam Yoko) and Mariama Tarawallie of Nimikor, Kono.

The five are amongst a galaxy of rural women who travelled from all over to Freetown to celebrate IWD.

In a similar development marking the Day, Dr. Blyden empowered women at the Western Area Rural District Awards.

She delivered a stirring keynote address at the event, leaving a profound impact on attendees, particularly young women.

Speaking at the 30 Most Influential Women in Western Area Rural District Awards, organised by Advocacy for Women and Youth Employment (6th Edition), Dr. Blyden’s speech resonated deeply.

She highlighted the importance of ethical and principled approaches to success, while cautioning against exploiting one’s femininity as a shortcut to achievement, urging instead the reliance on qualities such as intelligence, integrity, confidence, wisdom, and perseverance.

By emphasising the value of merit-based success, Dr. Blyden inspired a sense of empowerment among the attendees.

The event provided a platform for reflection on the challenges faced by women in rural communities and the importance of empowering them through education, skill-building, and opportunities for economic advancement.

Dr. Blyden’s message served as a rallying call for women to embrace their potential and strive for success on their own terms, without compromising their values or integrity.

As the ceremony concluded, attendees expressed gratitude for Dr. Blyden’s impactful speech, which encouraged them to navigate their paths with resilience and determination. The event served as a testament to the power of inspirational leadership in fostering positive change within communities, particularly among women and youth.
