Bishop Archibald Cole said that religion is the biggest constituency in Sierra Leone and that ‘we should not sacrifice morality for shortsightedness’.

He recalled the major roles played by religious leaders in returning Sierra Leone to a state of peace during the civil war, on one hand, and that of the Ebola outbreak, on the other hand.

Further emphasizing he said that Sierra Leone is a religious rainbow nation and that they are concern about the moral and cultural implications the abortion bill will bring to Sierra Leone. He said the new law is of grave concern to the citizens of this country and that the religious leaders will not sit by and allow such law to be enacted unchallenged. He said the urgency to revisit the parliamentary decision that enacts the abortion law cannot be overemphasized, noting that the fundamental flaws in the bill were enormous.

He concluded that the inter-religious position paper constitutes religious, medical, legal and gender justifications as to why the law is not good for Sierra Leone.

The position paper was the outcome of an inter-faith summit held at the St. Parish Hall on the 21st January 2016.
