The bridge was destroyed following allegation of illegal town mining within the district which violates section 26 of the Mines and Mineral Act.

The company has been operating in the district meeting its Corporate Social Responsibility fully. According to Sahr Joe, Public Relations Officer of CHICO, the company is a responsible one which is not only in operation to maximize profit but seek the interest of the people where they operate for national development and cohesion.

He pointed out that though the quality of the rehabilitation of the bye-pass road will be hindered by the destruction of the main Congo Bridge, CHICO will ensure a proper work is done in order to give access to people of Sierra Leone especially residents of Kono District to move freely.

Illegal Mining is becoming a trend in the District; leaving the residents languishing with no gains.
