Most of the inmates brought to court that fateful day are facing grave criminal offences ranging from Conspiracy, Larceny, Store Breaking, Robbery and Robbery with Aggravation among others, which contravene the Criminal Procedure Act of 1965 of the country’s laws.

Hell broke loose when the inmates were being arraigned by the Correctional officers in the main cell at the law court building at Siaka Stevens Street to appear in the various courts. They started shouting and raining all sort of invectives at the Correctional officers.

The Africa Young Voices (AYV) gathered that as the inmates continued to conduct themselves in a rebellious and disorderly manner with the intention to escape, they were banging heavily and shaking the cell gate.

After realizing that the inmates could be planning to escape, some Correctional officers rushed into the cell to quell the rioting inmates. But things went horribly wrong when the inmates put up stiff resistance before they started throwing fistful of toilet at the officers.

One of the Correctional officers who went into the cell to put the inmates under control were followed by his colleagues and all of them came under ‘toilet attack’ directed against them by the inmates and had to sneak out of the cell to save their lives as they had feaces plastered all over their uniform.

The remaining Correctional officers could not contain the inmates and fled the scene for fear of their lives to avoid the barrage of missiles of toilet, as the inmates brought to the court that particular day actually out-numbered the Correctional officers in attendance.

As a result of this ugly scenario, the head of the Correctional officers at the court used his cell phone to inform her bosses about the situation, who stormed the scene immediately with additional officers before the situation could be quelled.

The inmates were later bundled into a waiting truck and whisked to the Male Correctional Service Centre at Pademba Road; this included the female inmates. This disturbance halted proceedings in the various courts.
