Equally, the District Council is blaming traditional leaders of not paying revenue collected from their various chiefdoms. These allegations and counter allegations continue which result to sour relationships, lack of trust and backwardness of communities

Due to these problems, the Kailahun Inclusive District Peace and Development Committee (IDPDC) in its first executive meeting last Thursday, August 11, 2016 resolved to organise a one day stakeholders’ meeting at the end of the month to resolve numerous challenges and the way forward for the development of the District.

‘There are tensions among Paramount Chiefs and the Kailahun District Council for a long time’ says Hon. Sahr Fatorma, chairman of the Inclusive District Peace and Development Committee, adding , ‘we should work very hard to bridge the gap between them for the development of the district’

Hon. Fatorma emphasised that what is important now in the district is peace and good working relationships as the district lags behind in terms of development

‘All of us should work together irrespective of political affiliations and we should take responsibility of own actions if not whatever comes to the district should not benefit communities’ he stresses

The chairman assured that irrespective of the problems he is optimistic that after the stakeholders’ meeting at the end of the month Kailahun will go back to the glorious days as all hands will be on deck to ensure everyone is brought on board for the development of the district

The Executive Director, Fambul Tok, John Caulker explained the background to the formation of district Committees in Moyamba,Koinadugu and Kailahun districts. He stated that it is a framework to address district problems and also highlight successes.

He said communities should take the lead in development processes as Fambul Tok facilitates and walks alongside them to find answers to their problems. He said the various committees have planned activities that are carried out through their own revenue generation , adding that rotational meetings are funded by committee members. He called on Kailahun committee to do similar thing.

Sharing experience with the Kailahun team,Hawa Conteh,a member of IDPDC in Koinadugu district, highlighted successes such as resolving road construction and that of chieftaincy in the district. She says through the intervention of members, the suspended Chiefdom Speaker of Sulima has been reinstated. She also mentioned the setting up of a whatsapp group for effective communication purposes. She promised to take back what she has learned from the Kailahun meeting

The Development and Planning Officer of the Moyamba District Council who serves as Secretary to the Moyamba committee also highlighted successes. He mentioned the amicable settlement of the Moyamba junction-Moyamba road construction saga which nearly brought work to a standstill. He disclosed that with the intervention of members, the company agreed to create employment for community members in Moyamba and resolve to build camp site in Tonkolili district because of technical reasons.

Alhaji Ansumana was very confident as he disclosed the recovery of stolen solar batteries through the intervention of the committee, civil society and the Police. He stated that one of the chiefdoms that have not been allowing Council to collect rates/taxes has finally given the go ahead to Council to collect revenue.

Having shared experiences, the Kailahun District Committee members learnt a lot from the two districts and the chairman Hon.Fatorma promised that with all hands on deck the people of Kailahun will work together to restore lost glory.

Meanwhile a sub-committee has been set to intervene in the recent suspension of two chiefs in the district. The same committee is charged with the responsibility to find possible solution to bridge the gap between District Youth Council and District Council.

The District Officer,Gadiru Kabba has also consented to work with IDPDC towards the proposed meeting in Pendembu town.
