The deceased who had already been laid to rest was reported at the Tombo Police Station by a certain Abu Koroma who claimed that the deceased had stolen his one liter fuel and he was subsequently detained.

This press further gathered that the deceased, Sheku Turay was detained at the Tombo Police Station, on 10 February 2017, and while he was in detention, the complainant, Abu Koroma went an informed the investigating police officer that he was no longer interested in pursuing the matter against the deceased, and that he should released him.

The investigating officer was reported to have insisted that he would not release the deceased, until and unless somebody entered into recognizance on the deceased behalf as surety, before he would admit the deceased on police bail.

It was also reported that the since nobody could stand as surety, and even though the complainant had reportedly told the police to release the  deceased, he decided to detain him , until he  later found out in the early on 15 February 2017, that the deceased had died in custody.

The remains of Sheku Turay was later transferred to Connaught hospital mortuary on Lightfoot Boston Street in Freetown, where the Chief Medical Officer in the Ministry of Health and Sanitation,  and the Coroner of Freetown instructed the government consultant pathologist, Dr, Simeon Owizz Koroma to conduct postmortem  examination in other to determine the cause of death.

The lock-up officer was also reported to have been detained at the waterloo police station, while investigation in the untimely death of Sheku Turay police custody was in progress.

When contacted the Sierra Leone Police for comment in respect of the allegation, the head of the Sierra Leone Police Media and Public Relations Unit, responded that her department was not privy to the death of a suspect in custody at the aforementioned police station.

She however promised to contact the Criminal Investigation Department for more details on the issue, after which she would later brief this medium, but that never materialized.
