It was however puzzling that the same parliamentarians, in less than a week, have now debated and endorsed the abortion law.

Meanwhile, Hon. Isata Kabia has described the new law as the best thing that has happened to the women folks in recent times.

She argued that there is no perfect law and that the abortion law is not an exception.

She however emphasized that the new law is very much critical and significant to the well being of the women folks.

The new law, she said, will prevent maternal deaths and injury; safeguard reproductive rights; determine the circumstances and conditions under which pregnancies may be terminated; and provide for other related matters.

She said the safe abortion law received wide consultations in Parliament more than any other bill brought before the House.

There were mixed feelings among the women who witnessed the debate and enactment of law.

Rev. Evangelist Mrs. Martha Chigozie is the Founder and Chief Executive Director of Thorough Empowerment, Education and Development for Women and Girls in Sierra Leone.

She expressed her reservation with regards to the new law.

According to her, the new law will mislead the young girls to do unhealthy things.

Hon. Ansu Kaikai, who is the deputy minority leader in Parliament, also spoke against the new law.

Hon. Dr. Michel Sho Sawyer of Constituency 108 said the new law is a step in the right direction and lauded the pioneers of the Act.

However, the new law has been enacted and it is no longer criminal to undertake an abortion within the dictates of the law.
