According to Honourable Members of the committee, the oversight meeting was called in order to familiarize themselves with the ministry, look at their work plan for subsequent years and consider how they can share their experiences.

In his opening remarks, the Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Dr. Alhaji Kandeh Kolleh Yumkella said their mandate as parliamentary Committee is enshrined in the national constitution and Parliamentary Standing Orders, whilst espousing on their powers and outlining their oversight functions. He also informed that agriculture is one of the government priority proggammes and that President Bio is encouraging all leaders to lend their support in that direction. “If we cannot move agriculture, we cannot fight poverty” he maintained. He said in light of their oversight mandate, the committee will track down all those who are involved in farming including the donors, private sector and individuals as well as looking at the ministry’s work plan and try to collaborate for effective implementation. “We want to be au fait with your programmes in order to be ready to defend/support your budget when it comes before us in parliament” he noted adding that there are so many ways they can help the ministry.

On her part, the Acting Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, Mrs. Aminata Sannoh outlined the structure of the ministry noting that they have 6 divisions and currently working on a five year strategic plan. She informed that some of their projects will soon fold up whilst new ones are due to commence.
