He has appealed to persons involved in such senseless killings to henceforth desist, and called on police to intensify efforts in the detection, arrest and detention of suspected culprits.

He said such killings amount to murder and should be investigated with perpetrators brought to Justice.

He said suspected thieves and robbers must be arrested but not allowed to be killed by mobs, as according to him, the rule of law does not permit such uncivil conduct in a democratic state.

He said country’s streets must be seen to be safe and calls on the police to intensify patrols, as it is the duty of the state to provide security for all.

Interesting nonetheless is his stance condemning the Death Penalty.

“The Death Penalty must be abolished and the moratorium on death sentences should not be lifted because of recent senseless killings,” he emphasized.

He said that as far back as 2006 he had published a handbook (together with the University of Westminster) entitled “Death Penalty in Sierra Leone- Time for change ” and that he still believes in the arguments advanced at that time for the abolition of the Death Penalty including the undeniable fact that such is cruel, inhuman and degrading and has no place in modern Criminal Justice Systems.

“Suspected murderers must be speedily tried with all the guarantees of a fair trial including the presumption of innocence,” he concluded.
