Chairman of the Presidential Initiative on Climate Change, Renewable Energy and Food Security, Dr. Kandeh Kolleh Yumkella has said he prioritises Energy Transformation in Sierra Leone more than any other assignment on his table.

Speaking to newsmen, Dr. Yumkella, a renowned energy expert, provided an in-depth analysis of Sierra Leone’s energy crisis. He detailed how past government administrations attempted to resolve the issue, acknowledging their gains and shortfalls, and proposed comprehensive solutions to finally address the problem.

Central to his presentation was the Just Energy Transition Plan (JET-P) initiated by President Julius Maada Bio through the Presidential Initiative on Climate Change, Renewable Energy, and Food Security (PI-CREF).

Dr. Yumkella highlighted the significant financial achievements of the Bio administration, including the impressive $800 million pledge secured at the OPEC Fund Roundtable in Vienna, Austria, and the $480 million grant from the Millennium Development Compact.

He explained how these funds would be utilised to tackle some of the country’s most pressing issues, emphasising the critical role of energy in driving national development and supporting initiatives like the #FeedSalone project.

Connecting the dots between energy, food systems, and climate issues, Dr. Yumkella elaborated on the interconnectedness of these sectors and their collective importance for Sierra Leone’s future.

He did not shy away from addressing the inefficiencies of the Electricity Distribution and Supply Authority (EDSA), calling out its failure to collect adequate funds to cover electricity bills with the Turkish Karpower Ship.

He offered actionable recommendations to ensure EDSA improves its collection mechanisms and enhances its operational efficiency.

Dr. Yumkella’s insightful commentary and clear explanations made the complex issues accessible, providing the audience with a thorough understanding of the challenges and opportunities in Sierra Leone’s energy sector.

His ability to answer pressing questions with clarity further enriched the session, making it an invaluable experience for all attendees.

In essence, the press conference not only served its purpose of informing the public but also educated and engaged them, thanks to Dr. Yumkella’s expert knowledge and articulate presentation.

Sierra Leone’s path towards energy transformation and sustainable development seems brighter with such dedicated leadership and strategic planning.
