Sierra Leone has been given the opportunity to chair the United Nations Security Council for the whole of August this year.
This is according to President Dr. Julius Maada Bio at the Presidential Townhall at the Freetown (Bintumani) International Conference Center in Aberdeen.
President Bio said: “This will be the very first in the country’s history. Few years ago, this was a challenge but now the country is well respected internationally. Sierra Leone was elected unchallenged in 2023 to sit on the UN Security Council in 2024-25. The UN Security Council is made up of 15 members, including five permanent members (United States, Russia, China, France and the United Kingdom) and ten countries elected for two years, half renewed each year, and respecting rules geographical distribution.
