AYV News, October 12, 2026.

Sierra Leone’s Minister of Employment, Labour and Social Security, Umaru Napoleon Koroma, has joined the Ministry of Health in a mental health awareness walk from Youyi Building to Aberdeen Beach in Freetown, demonstrating the importance of collective action in promoting mental health and wellbeing across the country.
The walk brought attention to the need to raise public awareness about mental health, encourage people to seek support when necessary, and challenge the stigma often associated with mental health conditions. The initiative also highlights the importance of creating a society where mental wellbeing is recognised as an essential part of overall health and human development.
Minister Koroma’s participation is particularly significant given the connection between mental health and the world of work. Workplace stress, unemployment, financial difficulties, and unsafe working conditions can affect employees’ psychological wellbeing and productivity. As the minister responsible for employment and labour matters, his involvement underscores the importance of promoting healthy working environments, protecting workers’ welfare, and encouraging employers to recognise mental health as an integral part of occupational health and safety.
The collaboration between the Ministry of Employment, Labour and Social Security and the Ministry of Health reinforces the need for a coordinated national approach to mental health awareness and support. By connecting public health priorities with workers’ rights and welfare, the initiative highlights the importance of building a healthier, more productive workforce and a society in which people can access support without fear of discrimination or stigma.
