His Excellency the President, Doctor Retired Brigadier Julius Maada Bio said ten months ago that his New Direction Government will establish a University for the Eastern Region which will comprise of three campuses. The Eastern Polytechnic and Bandama Campus in Kenema, the Bunumbu Campus in Kailahun and the Woama Campus in Kono.

This will be the First Entrepreneurship Skills Development and Training University in Sierra Leone. And it will provide advance training for Sixteen Technical and Vocational Centers by the Ministry of Technical and Higher Education and the existing eighty (80) plus TVC’s across the country.

The Chairman of the meeting, PC. Sadiq Matoe Kapuwa VI said it was time for the Eastern Province to have a University. He said the establishment of a University in the East was first promised by Late President Kabba, followed by Ernest Koroma. But no effort was made by the previous Government.

Stating that, they as a Region were happy because they were coming to have a functional Entrepreneurship University in the East. He said with collective efforts, they will surely achieve the long awaited dream.

The Council of Paramount Chiefs, Kono District, PC Paul N Saquee V, from Tankoro Chiefdom said they were happy because the third campus will be located at Kono. He thanked the President and his Government for taking the bold step to transform the East.

Hon. Paramount Chief Cyril Foray Gondor II, from Upper Bambara Chiefdom, Kailahun, Said it was a privilege for them in Kailahun District to have the  Bunumbu Campus as a University. A place which has been neglected for far too long.

The Chairman of Eastern Polytechnic Council Professor Joe Pemagbi, said as a Council, their position is to set standards and do due diligence. Saying they were happy for such a wonderful move.

The Chief Minister assured the people that His Excellency the President is a man of his words and that the Government through the Ministry of Technical and Higher Education will soon send a team to do a feasibility studies in the areas where the three campuses shall be located. And that, by next year, the establishment of the University must have being approved by both Cabinet and Parliament. He asked all stakeholders to own the process.

The meeting involved all stakeholders from the Region including Paramount Chiefs, Ministers and Deputy Ministers, Senior Executives from MDA’s,  Members of Parliament, District Councils, Mayors, Women’s Organisation, Students, Drivers union, First Tricon, TAS Store, business community and a host of authorities within the Region.
