He was speaking during the commemoration of World Environment Day which is normally observed on the 5th of June every year. The theme for this year’s commemoration is: ‘Air Pollution’.

National Coordinator Sao-Lamin, informed his audience that the Consortium is a nationwide and broad-based forum with the objectives of complementing the efforts of the government in line with the Environment Protection Agency (EPA) which has the constitutional mandate to maintain and manage the environments of Sierra Leone.

Williams Sao-Lamin went on to state that air pollution occurs when harmful or excessive quantities of substances like gas, particles and biological molecules are introduced into the earth’s atmosphere which he said, may also cause harm to other living organisms and may also damage the natural habitat.

According to Mr. Sao-Lamin, air pollution is a growing challenge for Sierra Leoneans, adding that it is negatively impacting on our ecosystem.

“This is evident by our actions and inactions. We have cut down trees and have not planted them back; we dispose our waste with reckless abandon and carry out indiscriminate burning of bushes,” he lamented.
