 Serra Leone national team commonly known as our darling Leone Stars had moved two places up in the just released FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking.  

Following the incredible success throughout, history dated afar back in 1994 and 1996 when our darling Leone Stars made it to the African Cup of Nations, an effort that had been continuously buzzing the minds of numerous Sierra Leoneans, as most were wishing for history to reoccur. 

Fortunately, the latest ranking seen the country’s moving two places up from its initial 96 position, reminiscing the country’s most awful place ever was its 172 position in November 2007, Its best and most memorable position was its 50 position in August 2014.

It was in 1990s Leone Stars broke into the branch of glories, winning the hearts and minds of fanatic patriot. People were willing to improve the game and to extend the national team participation in international competitions.

 It was during this period Leone Stars flickered with the romantic description ‘Darling’, a word chosen by lovers of football game, to explain in simple terms their steady support for a team rising from underdog’s consideration to the mainstream of global attention.

This was the trend of the Zone-2, the proud era in which Leone Stars qualified for the first time, to take part in the African Cup of Nations tournament.


According to cross section of Leone star veteran players they described 1990s as a success story which had turned into a 21 years history.

Sierra Leoneans had registered their disappointments regarding the poor performances of Leone Stars and their constant failure to qualify for the both the African Cup of Nations and the FIFA World Cup.

 They further stated that while the country’s global rankings improving, the need to compliment that with the aforementioned qualifications could not be over emphasized. They pointed out ‘’In the last four years, football stakeholders, who are required to control mantle of football leadership, were in serious battle for supremacy, as to who have the legitimacy to control the nation’s football, a situation responsible for the degradation of football in the country’’ they said
