Prominent Sierra Leonean lawyer and All People’s Congress (APC) counsel, Joseph Fitzgerald Kamara (JFK), is scheduled to appear before the Supreme Court of Sierra Leone on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, as proceedings on constitutional amendments resume.
Kamara was previously held in contempt of court and remanded to Pademba Road Correctional Centre following a heated courtroom exchange with Chief Justice Komba Kamanda over filings from the Attorney-General’s Office.
The Supreme Court subsequently adjourned the broader constitutional amendment proceedings, along with matters relating to Kamara’s case, to October 13.
Ahead of the resumed proceedings, the Opposition in Parliament has called on the Supreme Court to reconsider Kamara’s continued detention, taking into account the apology he tendered, and order his release.
In a statement, the Opposition acknowledged the authority of the courts and the responsibility of legal practitioners to conduct themselves respectfully. However, it stressed that lawyers must also be able to perform their professional duties independently and represent their clients firmly within the bounds of the law.
The statement said maintaining a balance between respect for judicial authority and the independence of legal practitioners was essential to the fair administration of justice.
Minority Leader in Parliament, Hon. Abdul Kargbo, said the matter could be resolved in a way that preserves the dignity of the Court, protects the proper role of legal counsel and allows attention to return to the substantive constitutional issues before the Supreme Court.
According to Kargbo, the constitutional questions under consideration carry significant implications for constitutional governance and democratic accountability in Sierra Leone. He emphasised that they deserve careful and impartial consideration, with all parties given a fair opportunity to present their arguments.
The Opposition also expressed solidarity with Kamara and his family, while acknowledging appeals from members of the legal profession for a reconsideration of his detention.
Reaffirming its commitment to judicial independence, the rule of law and the peaceful pursuit of constitutional remedies, the Opposition urged its supporters and the wider public to remain calm and express any concerns peacefully and responsibly.
The statement concluded with an appeal for restraint, fairness and a timely resolution of the matter, reiterating the Opposition’s commitment to defending the Constitution and protecting the rights of all Sierra Leoneans.
