Sierra Leone’s First Lady, Dr. Fatima Maada Bio, has described the launch of the Sierra Leone Ocean Shipping Company (SLOIC) as an important step towards expanding the country’s opportunities in trade, investment, logistics and regional commerce.
Dr. Bio made the statement following the official launch of SLOIC at the Queen Elizabeth II Quay in Freetown, where she joined President Julius Maada Bio for the ceremony.
According to the First Lady, the establishment of the shipping company goes beyond maritime transportation, offering an opportunity to strengthen Sierra Leone’s connection to regional and international markets.
“SLOIC is about connecting Sierra Leone to greater opportunities,” Dr. Bio said, emphasising the potential of the maritime sector to support economic growth and national development.
She described the launch as a significant milestone in efforts to strengthen the country’s maritime industry and maximise the economic benefits of its strategic geographical location and ocean resources.
“This historic milestone represents another important step in our collective efforts to strengthen Sierra Leone’s maritime sector, create new economic opportunities, and position our country to benefit more meaningfully from its strategic location and ocean resources,” she stated.
The First Lady further noted that a stronger maritime industry could generate employment for young people, provide support for local businesses and contribute significantly to the country’s overall development.
Her remarks highlight the potential contribution of maritime transportation and shipping services to Sierra Leone’s wider economic ambitions, particularly in facilitating trade, improving logistics and creating opportunities for businesses.
Dr. Bio also expressed encouragement over the country’s development efforts under the leadership of President Julius Maada Bio, noting the importance of building a more resilient and prosperous Sierra Leone.
The launch of SLOIC comes amid efforts to strengthen the country’s maritime sector and harness its coastal and ocean resources to expand economic opportunities.
The extent to which the new company will contribute to job creation, trade expansion and regional commerce will depend on its operations, capacity and ability to compete within the shipping industry.
Nevertheless, the First Lady’s remarks underscore the broader expectation that the initiative will help position Sierra Leone to benefit more substantially from its maritime potential.
